Business Continuity for Pipeline Integrity Management

Even when the world is at a standstill, operators can’t put pipeline safety on hold. There’s too much riding on it.

In just the few short weeks since COVID-19 morphed from the global lexicon to the Americas and other areas of the world, integrity management teams have been forced to digitally transform both how and where they work, and to do it fast. Although one of the industry’s premier conferences on pipeline pigging and integrity management, PPIM 2020, was able to go on as scheduled in February, since then, face-to-face events like Europe’s Pipeline Technology Conference have shifted to interactive online versions, and video chats have replaced in-person meetings. Makeshift offices have been carved out of closets and kitchens in homes everywhere but relying on residential internet can be a slow and frustrating experience for people accustomed to the kind of technical infrastructure and firepower their companies offer. For integrity management teams, that’s made accessing mission critical data more difficult, which is highly impactful and challenging to meeting assessment and reporting requirements and making the important decisions necessary to keep pipelines operating smoothly and safely.

Of course, it’s not just the pipeline industry that’s having to adjust. When PwC surveyed CFOs the week of March 9, more than half (54 percent) said the outbreak could have a significant impact on their business operations. Even more—58 percent—said they thought the pandemic would decrease their revenue or profit.

This financial uncertainty is causing some companies to rethink their budgets and investments, including their allocations to technology. But we’re already moving more and more to a digital world and cutting back on the very tools that make people more efficient and productive is not the best approach right now.

As Vijay Gurbaxani, founding director of the Center for Digital Transformation, wrote, as we use technology to work from home, collaborate with our peers and move more of our lives online, these initiatives are more important than ever.

Not only is digital innovation part of future-proofing—preparing for any contingency from geopolitical crises to environment threats to the next global health catastrophe—it is essential right now to keep business moving, even if the starting point is a kitchen table at 3 in the morning.

The new normal may become the norm.

If there was ever a time to embrace digital transformation, that time is now.

With our Cognitive Integrity Management (CIM) solution, you can improve business continuity efforts and be better prepared for what’s next.

Big data analytics was transforming the oil and gas information landscape before the COVID-19 outbreak. But now, digital intelligence and cloud computing is more important than ever, especially as co-workers are miles, rather than cubicles, apart. If you haven’t transitioned to the cloud yet, there’s no better time. Not only will it keep colleagues connected during social distancing, it will be more advantageous as remote working becomes more entrenched in the future.
